In most websites and car seat sale specials, you will read about the “LATCH” acronym. This refers to the “Lower Anchors, Tethers for Children” system that was invented relatively recently to dramatically enhance an otherwise ordinary car seat’s safety features. This addition to modern car seats was developed as a result of growing needs for easier installation in everything from luxury car seats all the way down to cheap car seats. Since the year 2003, this system has become a standard issue addition to all vehicles. this means that “lower tether anchors” can now be found on two points that are located between the backs, and the lower cushions, of your car’s seats. These special anchors attach firmly to the car’s compatible seats and guarantee certain safety and peace of mind.
This new LATCH system takes away the need of seat belts when installing your car seat. Before this system’s invention, the most commonly used method of installation was to simply run the belt through a hole behind the seat and bring it around to envelop the middle. This mode of installation was an extreme hassle to the person doing the installing.
It was not a particularly time-efficient installation method, especially if you were rushing to arrive somewhere that required you to take your child with you. The newly made method of installation requires only the latching of two anchor points located in your car seat. This was much simpler to do, as all that was required was to push two articles of metal into each other until you heard a clear click, signifying they were secure.
Although the main reason for the invention of the current LATCH system was to ensure user-friendly and convenient utility, another factor was taken into consideration before this system was adapted for all cars: safety. One of the biggest problems of the old seat belt system was that the child could easily reach near them and undo the clasped belt. This made the seat unsafe and made driving with children very dangerous for both the parent and the child. The new anchor points make it impossible for the child to undo themselves, guaranteeing parents the safety of their children even with cheap infant car seats.
