When setting up your baby nursery, you can become overwhelmed with all of the nursery bedding, furniture, decorating and most of all, budget! Here are a few money-saving tips when considering the baby nursery furniture.
Bassinets or cradles are a sufficient for a sleeping baby for the first few months of their life. If you just find you’re in a place where you can’t borrow or buy a crib, utilize a cute baby bassinet or baby cradle.
When shopping for a crib, make doubly sure the crib meets the government safety standards. This isn’t so much an issue today in the United States when buying a new crib but if you’re considering purchasing a gently used crib or even borrowing a crib to save money; make sure you that you check to see if the crib has been recalled or that there are no missing parts. Also, make sure the crib doesn’t have any damaged parts.
If funds allow, consider investing in a convertible crib. Although a bit more pricey now, it will save you money in the long run from having to purchase additional furnishings. A convertible crib grows with your child, starting as a crib, and then changing into a toddler bed and then the final conversion into a full size bed.
Another great way to save money is to give old furniture new meaning. Look in the attic, around your house or even your grandmother’s house. An old dresser refinished or painted would make a great changing table when adorned with a standard changing table pad. As a bonus, the old dresser could house your child’s clothes and diapering supplies.
Looking around the house is another place to find a comfy chair to place in the baby’s room. Remember that you’re going to be spending a lot of time in this room so you need to have a comfortable place to rest. If you have a chair in another part of the house that you could use, but it doesn’t match the baby nursery decor, consider using a coordinating colored slip-cover. Perhaps, you find a great wicker rocker at the flea market but it’s not the right color; this is a simple fix with a latex based paint to refinish it.
Being low on money doesn’t mean being low on style. With a little imagination and some effort you’ll soon have a beautiful nursery to welcome home your new baby.
