In previous generations, baby clothes were certainly cute, but on the whole, a bit boring. Pastel blue, pink, green, and yellow were the usual colors, and prints were relegated to soothing little animals. Trendy and exciting was not a word associated with the world of baby boys clothes or baby girls clothes.

This is definitely no longer the case. Trendy baby clothes range, depending on the point of view, from totally fashion-forward to verging on the scandalous. By and large, there are three categories: Environment/Organic, Zen/Asian, and Rock ‘n Roll/Goth.

A good number of the Environment/Organic baby clothes are organic, but all have a strong environmental message. Bamboo, soybean, and fair-trade cotton cloth are well-represented. Amongst the cutest offerings are for infants, in sacque, cap, and blanket sets that dress baby to look like sweet peas in a pod, lady bugs, and butterflies. Animal prints for today’s baby trend more towards jungle animals, such as colorful monkeys, elephants, and giraffes.

Asian/Zen baby styles combine maximum cuteness with vivid prints. Sushi designs are prominent on bibs, burp cloths, and t-shirts. Onesies graphics range from Buddha faces, dragons, and Ganesh, the Hindu elephant-headed God that represents good luck. Baby girls can wear adorable dresses in retro Geisha and cherry blossom prints. Both sexes can wear kimono-style sacques and onesies, cute baby yoga pants and organic bamboo jeans, as well as brocade baby booties.

The Rock ‘n Roll/Goth baby clothes are the most in-your-face of all the trendy designs. The color black and skull and crossbones designs are prominently displayed in all infant and baby offerings. Perhaps the most popular clothes are the little t-shirts. The sentiments expressed range from “Anarchy in the Pre-K”, to “My Dad Rocks”. Many bands are represented: Beatles, Ramones, Led Zeppelin, Run DMC, and the Wu-Tang Clan.

Trendy baby clothes have grown from a small cottage industry to world-wide phenomenon, and trendy parents everywhere just can’t get enough of them.
