Control of ones subject allows a photographer to capture the best photo. Having the ability to change lighting, location, lenses, camera settings, and the subjects of the photo are what allow for this control. Mood and pose of the subjects lend even greater control.

Babies are an entirely different subject. All control over them is simply gone. They are tiny little people yet it is they that control how the shoot goes from start to finish. It is the photographers job here to simply capture the most memorable baby images that naturally occur. Use the following tips for photographing the ever changing moods and poses of babies.

1) Get personal

We adults have this “bubble” of comfortability that babies do not have. When getting a baby image you can fully enter there world and get up close and personal with the camera. Of course do this within reason, not frightening or upsetting the baby. If the baby is unfamiliar with a camera lens then you may need to stay back and “get close” by zooming in. Try using a wide angle lens to see the world from the babies perspective.

2) Notice Everything

Babies do everything for a reason and with a purpose at this age. Notice and capture every little movement. These tiny movements can make the best baby pictures images.

3) Be Comfortable

To keep the baby content and avoid frustration keep the setting familiar to him or her. Having the photo shoot in the family home, or the babies bedroom would be a good idea. Studios work well if your able to keep the baby occupied with things like toys. At all costs have the parents bring some items the baby knows from home as well. A blanket or stuffed animal are perfect.

4) Snap It Fast

The opportune time often comes when your not expecting it so ensure you have the camera set to burst mode or continuous shooting mode. Taking multiple shots in rapid succession to capture a baby image can lead to some great shots. This will allow for some great choosing of photos later on.
