sudden infant death syndromeBecoming a new parent is one of the most enjoyable experiences that life can bring you. It is a joyous occasion that makes many people happy, including the parents of the children, as well as the relatives who are now receiving an additional person into their family. Unfortunately, sometimes after the child’s birth, there can be complications that make the unthinkable occur, the child’s death. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome is one of these unfortunate occurrences that can take the life of a young child, seemingly without any reason being present for this happening.

Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or frequently referred to by industry personnel as SIDS, takes the lives of over 3,000 infants throughout each and every year, making it one of the most deadly things an infant can face during their young life. A direct cause for SIDS striking has not been pinned down yet, but several leading theories are currently being recognized as having more merit than others. With these theories being considered and scrutinized, several prevention methods have arisen over the years in an effort to lower the numbers of the afflicted.

One of the most important things you can do to prevent SIDS is to keep your body in great physical condition while you are pregnant. This means no smoking cigarettes, doing drugs, or indulging in alcohol, no matter how small the dose.

Perhaps the single most important method of SIDS prevention is to ensure that your baby falls asleep in his or her back, and doesn’t roll over onto their stomach in the middle of the night. Infants sleeping on their stomach have been linked to many cases of SIDS and this has been singled out as likely the most important factor of prevention that new parents must take into account.

It is important to take these factors seriously in an effort to prevent SIDS from happening to your family. Another very important tool in helping your child avoid this horrible scenario is buying a SIDS monitor. These monitors have the ability to vibrate your baby’s body if he or she stops breathing for a short amount of time. They are very effective.
