As a new parent you may not fully understand the dangers of baby walkers. They seem harmless enough, you put your child in them and they get to scoot around the floor. It provides your child countless hours of fun and let’s face it, you hours of freedom! The trouble comes into play because walkers actually provide children with too much freedom. Canada understands and believes so strongly that baby walkers aren’t safe that they’ve banned them. You are not permitted to sell, purchase, and giveaway or bring from the United States a baby walker. Many day care facilities within the United States have banned them as well. So what’s the big fuss over walkers?
Babies have been burned from fireplaces, hot mugs, boiling pans and many other things. Not so much because the parents neglect them, but because the children are so mobile and so quick that parents just aren’t expecting or prepared for the potential dangers. The same thing goes for children falling down stairs because people just aren’t prepared for the mobility of their baby. Some of these injuries are minor, while others have been serious and even disfiguring. Sadly, there have even been deaths from the use of baby walkers. There is a good alternative that still provides your child with countless hours of fun and you the freedom to do something else.
Stationary baby stations provide children with fun things to do, including the ability to bounce, play with toys and generally make a mess. The big difference? It’s not mobile, you provide your child with countless hours of safe fun. You may be thinking that it’s missing the development your cute baby gets from being in a baby walker, after all your baby learns to walk quicker right? Actually, the truth is that babies that use walkers take longer to develop. They learn to push and stay on their toes, habits that are counterintuitive to walking. So play it safe, use a stationary activity center and forgo the baby walker!
